About the race

The Kyoto Marathon offers a rare opportunity to run a marathon through one of Japan’s most historic and visually rich cities. Held each February, the race begins at Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium and winds past seven UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, including Ninna-ji, Ryoan-ji, and Daikaku-ji Temples, before finishing near the iconic Heian Jingu Shrine. With a route that skirts the Kamo River and Kyoto Botanical Gardens, and includes sights of the Gozan mountains, the course blends urban texture with traditional scenery. Crowds line the streets, including geiko and maiko cheering in full dress, while monks from Ninna-ji encourage runners at key points. Over 7,000 volunteers ensure smooth execution, and well-organized pre- and post-race events, including the "Okoshiyasu Hiroba" expo and "Otsukaresama Hiroba" recovery area.
