The Sheffield Half Marathon is a city race with a reputation for toughness. The route leaves the city centre via Ecclesall Road and climbs more than 850 feet (259 m) in the first 5.5 miles (8.9 km), including a recognised category 3 ascent. Runners are ranked not only on their overall time but also in two timed challenges: a one-mile climb to crown the King and Queen of the Hill, and a fast 10 km section on the return. Crowds gather along the route, especially in the city centre and at key points on the climb, giving strong support throughout. Now part of the Run For All Yorkshire Marathon series, the event has become a fixture for athletes seeking a demanding half marathon in the north of England.
